Presentation

I-Chun Jenkins grew up in a fishing village in Taiwan in north-eastern Burma.  She was formally trained in textile arts at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, where she graduated with Honors in 1994.  It was here that she was inspired to find new and innovative ways to utilize her weaving skills.

Jenkins developed her current style of weaving sliced magazine pages from her love of magazines as well as nature and conservation. She places great importance on protecting the environment and her work recycles materials that would typically be discarded and become harmful for the environment.  She uses these unconventional materials to create entirely new objects.

The way Jenkins manipulates her media of choice creates dimension and movement out of what is labeled 2-dimensional. These pieces are meticulous and poignantly intimate in allowing the viewer to approach and analyze woven fabrics consisting of communicative culture. The finish and images of the magazine paper also amplify the designs she creates.

Although Jenkins only recently developed her unique style, she has amassed a strong collector base. Each of her artworks is unmistakable and through this she is drawing international attention.
