Chad Goei

Chad’s work is done on birch panel. He feels a strong connection to wood as a natural element and as an expressive medium, particularly when stained, which enhances the clarity of the grain, and acts as a backdrop but also as a feature of the work. He often uses the wood patterns to inform a starting point and placement for the design, ultimately painted with vinyl acrylic paint, which has a smooth, ultra-matte, gouache like appearance. When not working on wood, Chad opts for natural linen-canvas, primed with clear-gesso to maintain a brown, earthen colour.

Chad pays special attention to the edges/sides of his pieces, either allowing the work to continue, or applying a solid and smooth coat of white or black gesso as a border. The designs themselves are bold, geometric, colourful, dynamic, and abstract, often resembling mountainous landscapes and/or forests, reimagined with pastels and pale tones, generally reduced to triangles.

Drawing inspiration from platonic basics, instinctual esoteric functions, and the omni-presence of fractal patterning, Chad Goei attempts to uncover existential insights with his abstract examinations, and has high hopes that they might inspire new ideas and understanding in others.
