Alfred Manessier (…….) Paints neither landscapes, nor beings, nor reality, at least not the palpable and tangible one. His non-figurative work is an invitation to follow the artist's gesture at the crucial moment of production. By following this gesture, we understand the energy, the upward movement. In this unique painting, Manessier divides the leaf into three colored surfaces. The one, blue, at the top, is reminiscent of the summer sky. Would there be a semblance of figuration at Manessier? Nothing is less sure. Ambiguity is fundamental in all of Manessier’s painted work. Georges Charbonnier, who spoke with the artist in 1956, uses the beautiful term "harmonics" to characterize the different "families of interpretation" of a work, a condition on which its richness is based. Here, the colored masses stabilize and temporize the black streaks, as if moving, calligraphy specific to Manessier. Power and finesse in harmony for this painter concerned about the world and who said "My life is as committed as my painting (...) the sum of the two makes the work"

Alfred Manessier

France Born in: 1911
Alfred Manessier is a French abstract painter, lithographer, and designer of tapestries and stained glass. Born in Saint-Ouen. Went to Paris in 1929 to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but also copied Old Masters in the Louvre and worked in the evenings in the academies of Montparnasse. In 1935 became a pupil of Bissière at the Académie Ranson.

Alfred Manessier painted in the 1930s in the Cubist-Surrealist tradition. Spent 1940-6 first in Benauge (Lot), then from 1942 at Le Bignon in Normandy. Contacts with the Trappists in 1943 led to a deep commitment to religion. His work became abstract by 1945, though he continued to draw inspiration from religious and landscape themes.

Exhibited with Le Moal and Singier in 1944 and 1946; first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Billiet Caputo, Paris, 1949. Alfred Manessier was also active from 1947-8 as a designer of tapestries and of stained glass for churches; has occasionally designed for the theatre. Awarded First Prize at the 1955 Pittsburgh International and the main painting prize at the 1962 Venice Biennale. Lived in Paris and Emancé.
