Adrien Goudier, Patxi Xingar
Adrien Goudier

Adrien Goudier

France  • 1985

Until then, drawing and painting were a "daily ritual" (after his day spent at the restaurant serving when he was in Paris), without any real artistic intention. When he arrived in Saint Jean de Luz, creation became a choice, a desire. From then on, his production will accelerate, intensify, and evolve.

His first works are a compulsive act, an outlet, the time to expiate an "anger" (as Adrien describes it) about his years in Paris, with a loose, impulsive and black line. Then his works will become a founding act, and of true creation, giving place to the appearance of the color in his works.

His works then... Drawings on paper or acrylic paintings on canvas... Exclusively male portraits. Of course, Adrien's "slap in the face", mentioned above, during his encounter with Buffet's works and in particular his clowns, is surely not for nothing. However, Adrien Goudier answers "I don't know" when asked "why only portraits", "why only men".

"But then who are these men?  Adrien answers that he does not know more, embarrassed, but explains that his feeling is that it is him, you, me, all of us... But finally, from his answer, we must especially retain the word "feeling", and understand "emotion"...

Adrien's stroke has been for a long time automatic, thoughtless, spontaneous, but always sincere because it is pure of any aesthetic research. His works are made in the moment, in one go, without ever coming back to it. Their creation stops when his gesture is exhausted, freed from emotion, from need.

But once Paris is left behind, the "anger" mentioned above diminishes to give way to pleasure, to the desire for the line. And then the encounter with Love, a marriage, fatherhood, but above all two family trials that lead Adrien to give of himself, to others: to take care of his mother, until she dies of a long illness, then of his son who is born with a double congenital malformation that needs to be treated.

He then shares, offers himself, the drawing also changes. He matures, his line too. From being an outlet and compulsive, drawing becomes a companion and desire, sharing.

Always guided by instinct, emotion, the line is more generous, more rounded, and if his works are always made of a line, Adrien takes more time ... goes deep inside himself, and finally put color, not without fear: "I stayed a long time looking at the canvas before grabbing the knife and put the color ... ".

Some time later, his 3 "clowns" were born, marking his true blossoming, from our point of view, without denying his previous works, but as the culmination of this journey also opening new horizons.

More than an anecdote, a precision which has its importance: each work is created by Adrien after he has chosen, to accompany his gesture, a wine of which he tastes a glass, and a music of which he is impregnated.

It is a ritual that was born when he was a sommelier at Fouquet's and that he drew every night after his service. "It is an association, a trinity, painting, wine and music that has become inseparable.

Melancholy of which he likes the softness that animates his line. "Melancholy is the happiness of being sad", a quote from Victor Hugo that Adrien particularly likes because he recognizes himself in it... To tell you the truth, we followed this evolution closely because Adrien had contacted Art Traffik a first time, attracting all our attention...

We then followed and observed his production for a year until we discovered his clowns. No more doubts, no more hesitation in front of his last works: we propose him to enter our selection and are very happy to offer him his first entry in a gallery and the recognition, as to present him to you.
