My work is about processing my observations of the world around me. I’m interested in using painting to capture the built landscapes that I see and interact with on a daily basis, preserving them in a snapshot. Through painting, I eliminate detail, heighten color, and hone in on the specific shapes and surface textures that remain when conjuring the memory. Our memories of a place are both more intense and less descriptive than the place itself. That dichotomy of general and specific in one image is the kernel that drives my approach to painting.

This series of pools continues my project of creating snapshots from my immediate environment. Since moving to Savannah, Georgia in 2017, I’ve spent a lot of time floating in the pool to escape the heat. This pastime led to my first pool works, which explore the perspective of being immersed in water. The surface of aqua pool water is mesmerizing because it reflects the landscape and sky, and constantly shifts. Translating the sublime transparency, sparkle and flow of pool water into a static image presents a compelling challenge. Pools are complex and alluring to look at even from above the waterline. The shape of a pool cutting through an expanse of concrete or grass is pleasingly graphic. Pools draw us in.

Pools are cultural icons, symbolizing our pursuit of comfort, leisure and control over the elements, and are connected to our collective memory of lazy summer days, tropical vacations, sprawling suburbia and blazing sun. My newer pool works key into these associative meanings by bringing the expansive pool deck of a country club, the swooping chrome ladder, and the landscape of the manicured backyard oasis into the frame.
The technical challenge of capturing moving pool water keeps me coming back to this series. The reflective quality of the pool surface, the myriad ways that light and shadow, weather, and landscaping interact with a pool, plus the striking visual of a pool set into the ground provide infinite challenges to explore. Also, the inevitable nostalgia of pool imagery ties to my larger pursuit of capturing landscapes as memories. Each pool represents one moment in my life that relates to our collective memory of diving in and letting go in the cool, blue water.
