  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Gloria Gill is part of one of the most famous artistic communities of the Australian central desert, that of Yuendumu, where in the 1970s contemporary Aboriginal painting appeared along with Papunya.

Like the majority of Aboriginal painters, Gloria evokes here a story of the Dreamtime - time of creation for the Aborigines - during which mythical beings (the Lightning Men, the Rainbow Python, the yam, etc. .) created Australia and founded the moral, religious, spiritual laws that still govern Aboriginal culture today. Here it is the Dream (Jukurrpa) of the Native Seed, or seed (Ngurlu). This edible seed comes from Lukarrara, a herb that grows in the Central Desert. The Aborigines crush these seeds in order to obtain flour with which they bake buns.

This legend is known only to initiates, we only know that it is linked to the sacred site of Jaralypari - located north of Yuendumu - represented by concentric shapes of different colors; the multiple points that compose them symbolize the Ngurlu.
