With Bernard Vié, the moderns have found their baroque sculptor. When you look at one of his works, you can immediately see his belonging and his singular difference. First of all, we can see that Vié is an architect, that is to say a master of the disciplines of collective space and the techniques related to it. A great connoisseur of materials and their specificity, his thinking is dominated by the order of construction, perspective and urbanism.

In his creation, the common denominator is the drawing: the architect cannot do without it and the freedom of the line as well as the graphic precision are found in his sculptures. Thus, Bernard Vié develops a personal imagination combining a secret dimension and a broad and often theatrical gesture. He sculpts and he paints, he builds. The basic parameters of the baroque equation are perfectly combined.

Vié distinguishes himself from what could be an expressionist approach by his demanding use of the most classical forms - like a builder who, in order to realize the building of his dreams, would use only the most solid and perfect materials. Efficiency at the service of dreaming.

One will also note his remarkable spirit of synthesis; much more than symbolic, each element of his bodies (hands, arms, legs, heads), of his animals, of his furniture, is true - certainly truer than the real thing - and each one is inscribed in a controlled space, in a game of precise geometrical balances. Each fragment of this sculpture has a dynamic that increases its symbolic humanism, producing a true interactive effect.

Bernard Vié's sculptures compose a succession of strong images that are an animated theater of forms. We are invited, by our gaze, to lend life to a project that concerns us and that each of us stages in his own way. It is this space of freedom that is offered to us, this density of creation put at the disposal of our imagination, which constitutes in my opinion the major contribution of Bernard Vié. These works have made a remarkable entrance in public and private buildings.

The theatricality of the being of which he asserts himself as an illustrator, the staging of the profound aspirations of our time, with the right to authenticity, identity, freedom, appear particularly in the monumental approach of the public commissions he has erected.

Paul Eluard once said that he only loved individuals born for the living and the essential, which applies particularly well to this artist. The concentration of emotions, the radiance of living symbols, the dynamics of lines, the tactility of materials, the brilliance of patinas, make up the panoply of the sculptor Bernard Vié which deserves the dimension of success.

- André Parinaud (text from 1992, excerpt)

Bernard Vié

France  • 1947

Bernard Vié is a painter and sculptor born in 1947 in France. He studied architecture at the Fine arts school and naturally became an architect. For years, he shared his time between his profession and visual arts. In 1988, he chose to devote himself to sculpture and painting.

His work revolves around dynamic characters, with elegant gestures and sensual curves. The spectator catches them in their intimacy. It's an invitation to be part of their everyday life which is filled with tenderness and poetry.

Bernard Vié opposes various materials like granite and bronze in order to play with the contrasts between lightness and mass, movement and static, quickness and slowness...A prolific artist, Bernard Vié makes sculptures, drawings, paintings and even writes in a world full of desire, sensuality, dreams and poetry.

Bernard Vié's works are part of several galleries. He regularly exhibits in France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Hong Kong. He also handles public and private orders.
