  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Gilles Verneret has chosen to follow in the footsteps of the "Grands Demeurants" or of known events that address the relationship between the real and the imaginary.
This series, he understands it as traces of traces, human testimony of what man does to the world. "This desire for traces is inscribed in a series of journeys, of chapters. His trip to the holy land triggered the first chapter which gave rise to a sublime series of images.
This photo is emblematic of the series "In the Footsteps of Jesus of Nazareth" was shown at the gallery in 2015 and 2018. It exists in different formats (23 x 23, 80 x 80, 100 x 100 cm).
"The originality of Gilles Verneret's images rests on the poetic process which determines them. They are the product of an" objective chance ", to use the terminology of surrealism, product of the encounter in the mind of the photographer with a mythical representation and a daily sign. How to find on holy places the images that our culture has imprinted in our minds from childhood? The episodes of the Gospels - which Gilles Verneret compares to a "report" on the life of Christ - constitute an edifying scenario made up of strong images that religious education, but also the whole history of art and a popular tradition, associates with images. How, once there, this imaginary baggage which is in essence anachronistic can it determine the “seeing”? Our gaze on Jerusalem has for so many years been contaminated by these media and tourist clichés. What attitude makes it possible to go through this “spectacle” to create the conditions for a meeting?
Gilles Verneret leaves his mind free. As a specialist in visual prose that he has forged over so many years, he sets out to meet daily life in Jerusalem. It is placed in a temporal field, because what marks these places today - the power of political news, the visual invasion of the place by the separation wall and so many signs of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in short this theater of war - are not present here in a demonstrative fashion. These are other signs that alert the photographer, which in everyday life can echo the story of the life of Christ. The approach is not mystical, it is rather that of updating our imagination .. / ... "
