HOMAGE TO HOCKNEY, RED ROCKS, BRAZIL NORDESTE, 69 ELEMENTS, 60X235 CM
certificat ART-Trust

The fragmented composition Red Rocks was made on the Northeast coast of Brazil in 2008. With 69 elements, it opens a panorama of more than 360 degrees, with entry and exit, showing the repetition of an open and closed cycle.

The objective was to deploy the space by fragments and to recompose a whole where, plastically the retained occurrences are the rhythm, the color, the circularity. The reconstructed panorama speaks of an unfolding and a circular gaze, paying homage to a superb site, made of red earth and canyons, in a reminder of David Hockney's Grand Canyon.

The desire to inscribe this landscape in a fragmentation also responded to the memory of Hockney's exhibition at Beaubourg ten years before, a temporal loop, replayed here, by the evocation of Hockney's pictorial installation and the circularity of the displacement of my photograph... on a much less imposing but related site, thus finding an original situation, combining pictorial memory and actuality of the site.

It was then an exercise in blind composition (the shooting was done on film developed in Paris, making it impossible to verify the mobility of the construction on the spot), punctuated by the rhythm of the appearance of the ocean in the distance, whose cut-out between the blue sky and the red earth, structures the movement of the gaze from left to right. The circulation of my own gaze over the landscape in order to unfold the horizon and the rotation of the body to cover the 360 degrees gives the possibility to perceive the totality of the circle in one glance, as if it were the emergence of a fragment of architecture, constituted in a single unit.

The number 69 is not a coincidence either. Visually, the number 69 speaks for itself: symmetrical, it links two graphic elements that are both opposed and identical. It evokes union, fertility and balance, in a dynamic perspective. It is an evocation of Yin and Yang.

Moreover, the spelling of the number 69 closely evokes the taijitu, a Taoist symbol of yin and yang which expresses harmony and balance, made possible by the union of opposites. The yin (black, negative, matter, night, winter, feminine...) unites with the yang (white, positive, spirit, day, summer, masculine...), without one of the two principles being considered inferior to the other. There is also a quotation from the Ouroboros, the alchemical symbol of the snake that bites its tail: the snake eats itself and is eaten (duality) but there is only one snake (principle of cosmic unity). Placing this composition under the augury of the number 69 evoked the resonances of the circle and its center, in an eternal movement...

The landscape is composed of the three elements Earth, Water, Sky (Air), the heat of the place, the fire is also included but cannot be taken care of by the photograph. Two events are also included, a man photographs two young women, a tourist action, a microlight flies at low altitude. The landscape thus lives its link with contemporary social practices.

Beyond, Rocs Rouges exhales its Solarity, giving to see a mineral world sculpted by the erosion and the time, in an immemorial.

Pascal Therme, Hommage à Hockney, rocs rouges, brésil nordeste, 69 éléments
Pascal Therme

Pascal Therme

France  • 1964

Following his studies in Letters, in 1988, Pascal Therme was associated for his photography in Parisian fashion, alongside the Couturiers and the most prestigious brands. Throughout this period, he pursued a visual creation based on experiences of deconstruction of the image. These experiments apply to all subjects treated by painting, Nudes, Portraits, Landscapes, Architectures, Interiors.

The object is a renewal of the vision and is based on the experience of David Hockney, The Grand Canyon, on the legacy of Cubism through a certain multi-perspective, on the formal legacy of the New Wave of Cinema. His montages, built by numerous photographs, autonomous, sequenced elements recompose a unit, making Image, wish to escape the unique perspective (camera obscura) and decisive time, founding couple of all photography, in a different approach to what makes an image , photography.

His compositions have used several media such as the Polaroid SX70 and its 35mm, then the ektachrome and the 105mm, the 180mm and are placed under the aegis of the Wisdom of Eros, a concept articulating the plastic artist and the man of letters, of being, in an original, even native writing.

Using the montage of these elements, driven by different guiding principles, multiple occurrences, Pascal Therme seeks to reintegrate the Secret Harmony of the Dream (a midsummer night's dream) through the discontinuity of the world, in a broken mirror , then redialed. This discontinuity creates a rhythm, so much so that the montages always seem to renew themselves, to wave, to breathe. A part of the Living seems inscribed there, between Apollo and Dionysos.

These montages are offered here in the form of quality prints, in various sizes.

A fragile beauty, in these precarious balances, has worked. This always experimental work was based on the tempo, the color, the blur and the sharpness, the modulation of the point of view, an interior traveling, different points of view and perspectives, seeking through the territories, to build a Unit, to approach the musical harmony of the dream in its visual correspondences. All an inspired plastic work.

These photographic paintings offer a Poetics of Space and Time recomposed, rediscovered, in dazzling colors.
