Zoè Gruni, Italian artist, back in Italy after a few years in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. For her third exhibition at the Depardieu gallery in Nice, she invites us to take stock of the migratory phenomenon all over the world: sculpture, video, drawings ... “Living in Rio de Janeiro, I often stop in the middle of a street to look at the sky and I observe mysterious "flying roots" of various sizes, suspended and attached: these green and living threads seem to have eyes to observe everything that is happening below "All that is alive, being human, animal, or even plant, born in a desert part of the planet must, in order to survive and develop, emigrate to a more fertile land. When it has found it, sometimes after a very long journey, it buries its roots and can grow and develop. But that inevitably causes problems with its new environment ... The roots as a metaphor for migration. In memory of all humans who have migrated and who are not accepted where they have laid their roots. Yet the Earth is everyone's right? Sometimes we forget that countries have different names just because of the borders. "Taupe" evokes the tunnels dug under the borders ... The poem Salmo by Wislawa Szymborska: "Only what is human can be foreign to us The rest are mixed forests, work of sap and wind". About the Boto Rosa sculpture Zoè Gruni's work captures the essence of the collective function of cultural memory. Her work offers an artistic perspective on social processes on myths and traditions. The artist thus builds an archive of choral mythologies which contrast with the secularization of contemporary society. The sculpture Boto Rosa (Boto Rose) offering a new contemporary exegesis of a legend of Brazilian origin that survives in oral popular culture, was created according to the same process used by the artist for all his projects: reestablishment of ambiguous hybrid forms obtained with everyday materials, linked to the territorial context. Analyzing the psychological function and the system of existence that promotes the conservation of these mythologies and their universality, we can identify links with systems of power. We realize how much these stories serve to exorcise and contain our fears. Today, Boto Rosa also connects Europe and South America. As its head emerged in Prato, Italy, its tail floats on the surface of the water of a fountain in the garden of the Museu da Republica in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Francesca Biagini
