A sculptor in love with concrete

The soul may be invisible, but everyone knows it lies somewhere inside the human body. And at the moment of death it departs. At that precise moment the shape and substance of the human body crumbles into powder.

The soul and the form of the human body are therefore inextricably linked. An artist in his studio knows this. He is constantly exploring this relationship between that which we can see and that which is invisible. This relationship we call life. And it's precisely this that Galbiati loves to fashion. When he can’t achieve it he knows he’s failed. So he starts all over again. Sometimes he has to be patient; sculpting an object has its own mysteries: wanting to sculpt, knowing how to do it is not the be-all and end-all. There is above all that unknown – grace.

Davide Galbiati is very conscious that as an artist he has a responsibility to make the soul visible to human eyes. He has a wonderful ability to make great sculpture out of wood. He draws inspiration from the relationship between the tree and the human being. In the past, he’s found many different ways to achieve this form of artistic expression. But the moment arrived when he had to find a new medium if he wanted to go further as an artist. He had to journey into an unknown land and conquer new challenges.

His curiosity has led him to experiment with media that he did not grow up with. Little by little he became aware of a strange paradox: that opposites can work together: on the one hand extremely subtle forms into which the soul transforms itself; on the other a medium – concrete which is despised, artificial …and inert.

Like the medieval alchemist who tried to change lead into gold, Galbiati wants to transform grey concrete into living, breathing stone. This is what a gifted chemist does. It’s a question of mixing substances, finding the right proportions, controlling the temperature, the level of moisture, the length of time the concrete needs to harden. What he’s trying to produce is a new substance that is more pliable to the wishes of the human hand, yet will also prove more durable and resistant to the passage of Time.

Every day he strives to improve this new substance; and every little advance represents a small but symbolic victory. Building trees and forests out of this new material is also a form of artistic progress. Instead of despair, why don’t we recognise it for what it is? Something inherently noble. Why not invest it with a soul? Why not decorate it with pictures? Why not place these concrete forms in settings that satisfy our secret desires?

This perhaps also explains why Galbiatti’s first sculptures in this new medium are mainly of the human face and torso.

Davide Galbiati

Italy Born in: 1976

A sculpture is a moment stolen to the void as the stars are minutes conquered from infinity. Davide Galbiati's motionless figures take us into spaces where silent gravity reigns. Davide's surgeon hands patiently dissect concrete, stone and wood in order to discover the imprisoned souls.

Henri Focillon speaks of hands in this way: "They are almost animated beings. Handmaids? Perhaps. But endowed with an energetic and free genius, with a physiognomy - faces without eyes and without voice, but who see and speak. Some blind people eventually develop such finesse of tact that they are able to discern, by touching them, the figures of a deck of cards with the infinitesimal thickness of the image.

Davide is descended in direct forms from the sculptors of the Egypt of Osiris. His quest is identical. To carve into the fruit of the flesh in order to reach the pure core of the unspeakable. This ascetic prospective calls for the collected action of the meditative gesture. But this monastic posture of Davide does not put his imagination to sleep. The fabulous caps the purity of his esoteric figures. The fantastic flames in the statics of the works.

It is not enough to be a poet of the Sacred, it is necessary that the form be equal to the thought. Davide Galbiati, a sculptor in mystical enchantment, arranges by skilful plans the beaches where light and shadow dialogue. He offers us all his mysterious volumes with emotional forces that radiate from within and assert themselves in tension on the visible surface.

Davide Galbiati is a magician.
