Dishware

Dishware includes an array of objects used to eat, present, and store food. This includes cutlery, glasses, plates, bowls, pans, and varying kinds of containers. Dishware is made out of a wide variety of materials including but not limited to glass, wood, earthenware, metal, terracotta, and porcelain

Dishware has existed since prehistoric times. There is evidence of these objects dating back as far as the third millennium B.C., specifically within the Campaniform culture. These objects included bowls, beakers, and vases made out of ceramic. During the Bronze Age, materials used during the fabrication process of dishware began to expand. Craftsmen began experimenting with luxury materials, such as gold and silver.

Various ceramic cultural materials have been discovered at archeological sites that derive from Ancient Greece and Rome. Pieces from these periods are located in museums all around the world. In the Middle Ages, a range of dishwater objects was used. This included: jugs, pitchers, bowls, gargoyles, cups, pottery, and other items. In terms of the variety of materials found from this period, it proves the cultural exchange between Western and Non-Western cultures. During the Renaissance, aristocracy embraced a wide assortment of dishware. This included objects used during table service as well as dishware made simply to be displayed. Dishware continued to evolve over the centuries. 

As technological advancements continued to progress, so did the diversity and range of dishware. The boom of industrial production led to the widespread availability of dishware.
