Estilo tropical

Cuando el artista Paul Gauguin llegó a Papeete en junio de 1891, su imagen romántica de Tahití como un paisaje intacto, un paraíso, derivaba en parte de la novela de Pierre Loti Le Mariage de Loti (1880). Lo que hay que señalar es que Gauguin se sintió realmente decepcionado por el grado de corrupción de la vida cotidiana en Tahití por parte de la colonización francesa. Por ello, trató de sumergirse en lo que creía que eran los aspectos auténticos de la cultura. Al incluir posteriormente motivos tahitianos en pinturas y cerámicas, hizo gala de lo que en el arte occidental se denomina primitivismo. Gauguin y Henri Rousseau tomaron prestados temas considerados exóticos o incluso tropicales, como en la obra de Rousseau En un bosque tropical Combate de un tigre y un búfalo (1908-1909).

A pesar de la importancia del arte no occidental para el desarrollo del arte moderno, el primitivismo ha sido criticado a menudo por reproducir estereotipos racistas. Ahora bien, se puede argumentar que el canon ya no está totalmente centrado en Occidente y el movimiento artístico de estilo tropical ha sido representado posteriormente por las obras de arte africanas de Roger Djiguemde y también de Ana Maria Dias, que procede de Brasil. Esto refuerza la importancia de este estilo artístico a pesar de lo exótico de su entorno.
