Que ce soit les NFTs ou l'art pixelisé, l'art numérique fait grand bruit dans le marché de l'art. Et pour cause ! L'art numérique est un terme général pour désigner toute forme d'art qui intègre, d'une manière ou d'une autre, des aspects technologiques dans son processus. Résultat ? Un grand nombre de possibilités s'ouvrent aux artistes numériques dans leurs œuvres, que ce soit sous la forme de l'audio, de la vidéo, des algorithmes, de la réalité virtuelle ou de la conception graphique.
L'art numérique fait ses débuts en 1985, sous la main du célèbre Andy Warhol. Pour le Lincoln Center à New York, l'artiste a présenté l'image de Debbie Harry en se servant d'un ancien modèle informatique, l'Amiga. C'est grâce à cet outil et le programme ProPaint que Warhol a pu, à sa manière, changer les couleurs et les formes de l'image de Debbie Harry.
Depuis cette époque, l'art numérique s'est radicalement transformé. Le nombre d'artistes numériques célèbres est en pleine croissance, avec des grands noms comme James Turrell ou les créateurs du projet CAVE. Ce dernier est une installation virtuelle qui se sert de projecteurs afin de recréer quelque chose de semblable à l'Allégorie de la caverne de Platon. D'autres artistes digitaux, comme Evelyne Huet, se servent de leurs études en mathématiques pour inspirer leurs créations. Sans compter l'intégration de digitizers artistiques ou d'algorithmes, qui font par exemple le succès du couple Frédéric Durieu & Nathalie Erin.
