La politique d'identité
Le mouvement artistique de la politique de l'identité a pris son essor entre les années 1960 et 1980. Il fait suite à une série de mouvements politiques pionniers concernant la diversité et la représentation visuelle de l'identité personnelle. Face aux tensions nées de la marginalisation de certains groupes sociopolitiques et culturels aux États-Unis et en Europe, l'art est rapidement devenu un symbole d'émancipation sociale et d'autonomisation.
Galvanisée par le mouvement des droits civiques des Noirs des années 1960 aux États-Unis, la politique de l'identité fait référence à une série d'artistes et d'expositions qui ont cherché à honorer les expériences des groupes historiquement opprimés. Les membres de ce mouvement ont révolutionné la représentation de l'identité personnelle dans l'art, ont protesté avec véhémence contre la discrimination à l'égard de certaines races, de certains sexes et de certaines sexualités, et ont inauguré une nouvelle ère d'art célébratif, diversement représentatif et souvent profondément subversif.
Les champions du mouvement de la politique identitaire dans l'art sont Robert Mapplethorpe, Lorna Simpson, Judy Chicago, Martha Rosler et Felix Gonzalez-Torres. La prolifération des politiques identitaires a été radicale et généralisée : les artistes ont célébré les espaces queer, mais aussi interrogé les préjugés raciaux et encouragé la deuxième vague d'efforts féministes.
