New York
La ville de New-York est devenue le symbole même de la modernité. Au début du 20ème siècle, New-York représentait le seuil du continent américain, Ellis Island en était la porte. Ville de tous les espoirs, le cinéma, la littérature et les arts visuels ont tenté de saisir la complexité unique de cette ville aux innombrables visages. De la célèbre photographie des ouvriers qui déjeunent suspendus au-dessus du vide par Lewis Wickes Hine aux scènes de rue de Vivian Maier, la ville fascine encore de nos jours.
Et pourtant, des innombrables oeuvres qui la dépeignent, aucune ne parvient à embrasser pleinement toute la complexité grouillante de ce lieu chargé d'histoire, de rêves, de désillusions et de gratte-ciels démesurés.
Car il semble impossible de choisir. Que dire d'une telle cité ? Il faudrait pour bien faire, parler de ses couleurs, de ses avenues au cordeau, de la foule des ses habitants, de leur diversité, de leur grandeur et de leur décadence. Il faudrait ensuite dire les flots de monnaie que charrie l'Hudson River, dépeindre la statue de la Liberté, la Chrysler Tower et l'Empire State Building, faire toucher les cicatrices du terrorisme et la vibration de l'asphalte que provoque un métro à son passage dans les entrailles de la ville. Mais New York est aussi une ville de joies, de musique, de succès, une ville d'amour et d'ivresse folle, une ville d'enfant et une ville d'adulte, une ville aussi rouge que le pont de Brooklyn et aussi verte que les feuillages de Central Park. Une ville inénarrable en somme.
Il est intéressant dès lors de se pencher sur le travail de Gottfried Salzmann. Artiste pluridisciplinaire, il travaille sur la fluidité et la transparence des représentations, se définissant lui-même comme un peintre de l'eau. Il propose des oeuvres qui flottent littéralement aux frontières du dessin, de la gravure et de la photographie, évanescentes et irréelles.
En peinture, Daniel Castan et Patrice Palacio donnent à voir des paysages urbains vidés de leurs habitants, où la vapeur des contours des buildings révèle une activité continue et discrète. Ces artistes invitent à un étonnant voyage à New York city, comme un long vol en hélicoptère au dessus de la “grosse pomme", entre Greenwich village, Manhattan et madison square.
A l'inverse, Jerome Liebling, photographe urbain, s'arrête sur un personnage unique, un enfant noir adossé à une voiture en 1949, surpris par le regard du photographe.
Alors est-ce la ville que l'on voit ou bien son reflet dans la rétine de l'artiste ?
