Religion
La religion agite les passions depuis la nuit des temps. L'art n'est bien évidemment pas épargné, ce qui n'étonne pas lorsque l'on sait qu'historiquement, l'art et le sacré sont intimement liés.
Et pour cause ! L'histoire religieuse était l'unique et seule source concevable d'inspiration artistique pendant des siècles. Les peintres du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance recherchaient systématiquement la technique pour représenter les scènes religieuses en soulignant la symbolique et en respectant une iconographie très précise. De plus, quelle que soit sa confession, l'homme a également toujours conçu avec soin les objets, décors et constructions qui accompagnent ses rites et ses cultes religieux.
Mais les représentations sacrées ne sont pas permises dans toutes les religions, en particulier le judaïsme et la religion musulmane, de sorte que l'art et la religion entretiennent parfois un rapport conflictuel. La vie religieuse et les fêtes religieuses font, quant à elles, l'objet de nombreuses représentations en peinture, photographie ou sculpture, comme une sorte de véhicule de transmission des coutumes et des croyances religieuses.
