Famous Fashion Photographers

Famous fashion photographers have managed to successfully straddle the creative industries of fashion and art. It's no secret that a fashion photograph is just as at home featured on the cover of Vogue as it is being exhibited at the world's most prestigious art museums and galleries, and fashion photographers have become some of the biggest names in both art and fashion.

Fashion photography is believed to have originated in the late 19th century, with developments in cameras and printing coinciding with the establishment of fashion magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. The heartbeat of the movement until the late 1930s was undoubtedly Paris, where European photographers such as Horst P Horst, who worked for Vogue, became established. The fashion photography scene then migrated to New York City, where artists like Martin Munkacsi and Cecil Beaton gained their notoriety. Later into the 20th century, the fashion photographs of Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Bert Stern and Richard Avedon earned an iconic status in art.

In 2021, contemporary fashion photography continues in the legacy of its predecessors. Moroccan icon Hassan Hajjaj's photographs showcase bright, casual fashion while focusing on the personality of his subject. Meanwhile, American photographer Tyler Shields' famous photographs often blend fashion with elements of Surrealism.
