Presentation

Born in Vietnam where she spent her youth, Linh Jay (Nguyen Le Phuong Linh) came to France to study at the School of Fine Arts, from which she graduated in 2016. Now living in the Gard region of France, her photographic work is based on landscapes, territories in the process of transformation, and vernacular habitats in France and Vietnam, whose common characteristics and differences she aims to identify.

Collecting also objects of all kinds, she sometimes creates installations which are other forms of a poetic archaeology of the environments where she lives. But her main achievements, from her formative years, are video films taking as their subject an animal (Kingfisher, 2016), a stone-cutting craftsman (Maël, 2015), a famous literary text (From the memory of "Morel's Invention", 2015), a wander through Marseille with a poet friend (Rita,2016),etc.

Envisaging her films from the outset as confrontations between different languages, she integrates her own images as much as archives, her texts as much as those of other authors, her voice as well as those of her interlocutors. Her editing research is indebted to filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard and to documentary filmmakers who are interested in ethnography and mythology, such as Jean-Daniel Pollet, to whom she has great admiration.

Because of her own situation between two countries as different as Vietnam and France, Linh Jay is deeply occupied with issues of translation, which are central to her creative processes, "so that borders are erased, places are woven, natures intersect, viewers are lost and begin to wonder about spaces-time, places, identities."
