Presentation

Hamanishi Katsunori 浜西勝則, born in 1949 in Hokkaidō, the most northern and isolated island of Japan, is a printmaker creating mezzotint engravings. He lives in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. His favorite subjects are still-life, twigs, branches, rice stalks, ropes, presented in a three-dimensional form on Art paper. He graduated from Tokai University in 1973. In 1986, he received a grant from the College Women's Association of Japan becoming a visiting artist at the Cleveland Institute of Art. In 1987 he received a grant from the Japanese Government's Cultural Affairs Agency and spent a year studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Visiting professor at the University of Alberta, Canada he started to create mezzotints. He belongs to the new generation of this very demanding technique, mastered by the Italian French Mario Avati (1921-2009), Post-War Ecole de Paris Master of Mezzotint, internationally renowned, with his Catalogues Raisonné in 7 Volumes. Avati created the lost and forgotten precious tool, a rocker, and thus allowed the Renaissance of the XVIIth Century, forgotten Mezzotint print-making. The Japanese Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000) living as well in Paris, mastered as well this very demanding technique. Hamanishi Katsunori exhibited often with him in the United States.
