Presentation

Gimeno's introspective work coexists with an artistic production that is filled with openly socio-political connotations, drawing their inspiration from external multicultural sources. Maria Gimeno likes to make the audience an actor in her art. For instance, her work "Under a stone", 2010, is composed of a tiny embroidery, representing the only known portrait of Sakineh Mohamed Ashtiani, under a stone. To see the embroidery, it is necessary to lift the stone.

Gimeno also carves holes into walls or ice. For the artist, digging is the allegory of an act of self-determination and revealing truth. The spectator is invited to share this experience and his gaze will discover, at the other end, a new perspective.
