Ricky Weaver (b. 1990) is an image-based artist, theorist and mother born in Ypsilanti, MI. Her practice is currently based in Los Angeles, where she works as a fellow at ArtCenter College for Art and Design. She has exhibited work at Art Miami, UT Austin's Black Studies Gallery, Sofa Expo, etc. Her work has been acquired by institutions such as The Wedge Collection and published in Aperture's As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic (a survey of Dr. Kenneth Monteques' collection featuring artists such as Dawoud Bey, Lorna Simpson, Deana Lawson, etc.). Ricky was named one of LensCulture's 2020 Critics' Choice Artists, selected by Susan Thompson, Associate Curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in The Independent Scholar Fellowship at the Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA from Eastern Michigan University, with a concentration in photography. Her art and theory focus on the lexicon generated by the everyday practices of black women, dark undercoverage, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. Most recently, she has taken on the responsibility of Lead Visual Consultant, specialising in image theory and photography, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media. Ricky is looking forward to "Crucify My Flesh", her next solo exhibition at the David Klein Gallery which will open in early 2023.
