Now based in the United States, British-born Becca Casey has cultivated a unique design ethos: one which incorporates the traditional English countryside styles into the distinctive flair of the East Coast. This week, the Artsper team have had the pleasure of speaking with Becca about her journey to establishing her own design studio, her most memorable projects to date, and her top picks in the world of contemporary art!

1. Hi Becca! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Could you start by telling us about yourself and how your company Becca Interiors came to be?

Thank you for having me! I was born and raised in the southwest of England and moved to the US for university in Colorado. In high school I knew I had a love for the Interior Design industry, and although not studying it, I decided to pursue a career in New York City. I started by interning with some incredible designers in the business, learning the industry through experience and honing any technical skills I could. After working in Manhattan and garnering a small array of private clients, I founded Becca Interiors in 2016. Our designs are largely residential; working on anything from ground up builds to historical renovations. Our company is based in Connecticut with projects throughout the east coast.

2. How would you describe your design ethos? Is there a particular way in which you approach each individual project?

I like to describe my style as British rooted with a neo-traditional flare. I enjoy classic silhouettes amidst modern touches. Every project we look at as entirely new. We really get to know our clients at the beginning and understand their needs. From there we weave in our own style and finesse each area of the project to give it a truly bespoke look. We are extremely lucky to be at a place where clients come to us for our look, which makes it all the more fun and inspiring.

3. From Connecticut to New York, Becca Interiors has completed some major projects across the east coast. Do you have a favorite project to date?

Oh goodness, that's a hard one. We have worked on an array of different projects with so many incredible clients. A fan favorite has been Darien Colonial, I really enjoyed working with scale and proportion in that home. However I love the mix and ingenuity of our recently featured project, The Carriage House. I truly put so much heart into this process that I end up walking away loving the home, and the people under its roof.

4. You grew up in the English countryside. Do you feel that your upbringing in the UK has shaped your design preferences? Does location play a role in your creativity?

Absolutely! I continuously lean on my upbringing to influence my designs. There is so much history and character that can be woven into a space by just thinking through its finishes, and the overall personality of the space. Much of this for me is an infusion of my time growing up in the UK as well as my adult life in the US.

5. How does contemporary art fit into your interior design practice?

I love how the nature of a space can be transformed by artwork. Though quite subjective, your choices in art can take a very traditional environment to an entirely new perspective with the inclusion of contemporary art. It is the finishing layer that is so crucial to design, and I find, says a lot about the character of those who are residing in the home.

6. Are there any historical or contemporary design styles which really resonate with you?

I absolutely love classic oil paintings, minimalist etchings, and folk art. Each style brings so much to a space. An oil painting of vegetables leant on a shelf in the kitchen, a dainty etching to fill a vacant space. With each stroke you can truly feel the essence of the artwork.

7. Lastly, can you describe your dream project?

I'm not sure I have one! Each project and day is a dream. I consider myself so lucky to be doing something which I truly love.
