Monique Leong has certainly left her mark on the ever-evolving world of contemporary art. Having worked with some of the top art institutions in the world, Monique sits on the Board of Paris' infamous Palais de Tokyo, Beijing's X Museum, and the International Circle for UCCA in China. We were delighted to have the opportunity to hear from Monique about her journey in the art world so far, her personal art collection, and her commitment to bringing the work of emerging artists to the fore.

1. Hi Monique! You're an art collector and avid supporter of emerging artists. Have you always loved visual art?

Absolutely! I have always had an appreciation for visual art, but my love for it deepened when I started to understand the complexities and nuances behind each piece of artwork. Growing up, I used to dabble in painting but I quickly realized that it wasn't my forte. However, this made me appreciate the incredible talent and skill that professional artists possess even more. To gain a better understanding of the stories and messages that artists convey through their work, I turned to studying art history. This has allowed me to appreciate art beyond its aesthetic value and to delve into its cultural, historical, and social significance. I think this is evident in my preference towards artists who not only have exceptional artistry skills but also a deep understanding of art history, as it allows them to create works that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and thought-provoking.

2. At your young age you already have accolades many dream of, from being on the International Board of the Palais de Tokyo, to the Board of Trustees at Beijing's X Museum. Can you tell us a bit more about your professional journey?

During my university years, I took part in several summer internships, which helped me to realize my passion for working directly with artists. Since graduation, I pursued various projects that allowed me to explore this interest further. One of the most exciting projects I've been involved in is the 'Crypto Mermaids' NFT project by artist Gretchen Andrew, which aims to promote Web3 education. I also have some exciting curatorial projects coming up later this year. Recently, I've joined STUDIO WEST, a young gallery in London that focuses on emerging artists. I'm thrilled to be part of their team and to support talented artists at the beginning of their careers.

3. You've grown up around the world and are highly involved in the international art scene. Which market are you focused on for 2023?

As someone who is passionate about supporting young, emerging artists, I'm always on the lookout for new talent at art schools/fairs/exhibitions/platforms. From my observations, there has been a significant rise of Chinese artists entering the international art scene in recent years. Therefore, I believe that the Chinese art market will continue to grow in 2023, with even more talented Chinese artists making their mark on the global art stage. As someone of Chinese descent, I'm excited to see this development and to support these emerging Chinese artists in any way that I can.

4. Speaking of present-day trends, which artists are your current favorites?

There's always a long list of artists I love. However, favorites I have kept my eyes on are Li Heidi, Paul Rouphail, Oliver Beer, Liang Fu and Katarina Caesarman.

5. Your interest in art has resonated with a growing Instagram audience and you're followed by industry giants such as Sotheby's. Has social media changed your relationship with art?

Definitely - social media has also provided an avenue for emerging artists to showcase their talent and gain wider recognition in the art world. It has allowed me to constantly be indirectly updated, even if they are situated in different countries. Instagram has been an incredible platform for discovering new artists, some of whom I am even including in shows that I am putting together this year!

6. Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring young collectors?

My advice to aspiring young collectors is: be open-minded and explore a wide range of art - never to turn your back on any style or medium of art too quickly! When starting out, it's important to learn more about the art you would not typically be drawn to from others to build up your own critical voice and refine your taste. Don't be afraid to seek guidance from those who can offer valuable and experienced insights into the art world. Most importantly, collect art that represents you and avoid the “investment" mindset!
