DOMINIQUE CHAPUIS
#FFFFFFFFFF
October 3-13, 2020
White asserts itself in the work of Dominique Chapuis as the primary unit of perpetual construction. These modules animate the space of the marie-robin gallery in their infinite combinations, variations and structures.
The artist makes the square monochrome, the basis of his research towards a balance of the present. She creates predefined geometric shapes through the precise superimposition of strips of paper of different widths. Ideograms of a new language, the elements slide on the surface of the painting until they exceed the margins. The practice of Dominique Chapuis is then in line with the tradition of concrete art while exceeding its limits.
By disrupting the original geometric scheme, the stripes invite the careful observation of the rhythm and chiaroscuro that animate the support. Each creation is in fact the result of the application of several materials - from paper to acrylic, from pastel to wax. One after the other, these materials are deployed through a repeated and meditative gesture that reveals the tactile quality of the painting.
The works presented in the exhibition #FFFFFF interpret the tension of the human being towards the codification of the "visible" as environment, relationships and behaviours. A trend accelerated by the contemporary digital revolution.
But, in a world of "infinite fluctuations", is this codification really possible?
