François Morellet

Born in 1926 - France

Francois Morellet is a major figure of minimalist art. He was born in 1926 in Cholet and died in 2013.

He practices painting, sculpture and printmaking starting with figuration before dedicating entirely to abstract art and to a research in this field in 1950. With his scientific knowledge and studies on visual perception, Francois Morellet started working with experimental art.

He uses lines, squares, triangles and nothing else to make his canvases. A geometric abstraction that plays with the repetition of shapes and with their simplicity, which is why his work is often compare to that of Mondrian. He creates wefts that he poses in his support. To minimize interferences, Francois Morellet only uses a limited number of colors. It is through a game of juxtaposition, superposition and fragmentation that his visual impressions vary.

For the artist, the pieces are self-sufficient by themself, this is the reason why Francois Morellet defends a creation that should be impersonal according to him. In 1960, he went further in his refletions and founded the Research Group of Visual Art (GRAV) with other artists. Their goal was to demonstrate and give a social sense to geometry.

His career took a turn in 1963 when he started adding to his pieces neon colors just like Dan Flavin. This new procedure earned him international recognition. He developed and advanced in his researches of optical and kinetic art as well.
