Born in 1923 - Spain
Antoni Tapies was born December 12, 1923 in Barcelona, Spain. At a very young age he develops artistic talents, but follows familial advice to pursue law, although he still continues to draw and to paint during this period. He initially takes drawing classes, before devoting himself to painting in 1946. In 1948, he is the cofounder of the Dau al Set movement, similar to the Surrealist and Dada movements, and whose central figure is the Catalonian poet Joan Brossa. In 1949 he meets Joan Miro, who will influence him enormously as will Paul Klee during his first, surrealist period. The same year he participates in the Autumn Salon in Barcelona.
His first personal exposition takes place in 1950 at the Galerias Layetanas in Barcelona. He takes quickly to abstraction, and integrates non-academic materials into his compositions well before Povera art. Starting 1953, he is one of the first to mix the “noble” tools of his art with material, adding clay powder and marble to his painting, and making use of torn paper, rope, and cloth. Across his work Tapies shows a particular interest for lacerations, dents, and scratches within his compositions. He qualifies his work as “battle fields or wounds multiplying to infinity”. The next year, in Paris, he meets Braque and Picasso, and discovers the informal art of Dubuffet and Fautrier, as well as the writings of Michel Tapié. In 1952, he participates in the Venice Biennale and the following year his works are presented at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York.
In the 1960s, he works with Enrique Tabora, Antonio Saura, Manolo Millares, and numerous other artists. Beginning in the 1990s, he integrates materials with more volume into his work, such as pieces of furniture, as well as creating his first sculptures and assemblages. The artist creates his first ceramics in 1981. In the 1990s, he collaborates with Estefano Viu, Maximiliano, Eduardo Chillida, and numerous other artists. In 1984, the Antoni Tapies Foundation is created in Barcelona.
