Edward Shahda

Born in 1952 - Syrian Arab Republic

Edward Shahda is a Syrian painter and sculptor, born in 1952. Firstly, he joined the Suheil Ahdab, Hama center in 1968 where he studied visual art and then joined the Faculty of Fine arts in Damas in 1971. He also stayed for a while in Russia at the Anatoli Klankov studio from 1991 until 1992.

Shahda's main focus is the human being and he draws inspiration from women for his sculptures and paintings through unconventional forms. Characters occupy the space of his paintings. Colors and strokes are combined, just like the figurative and symbolic aspect for his work on humans.
Edward Shahda uses various techniques and means of expression: acrylic, oil painting, collages, Indian ink drawings on rice paper.

Since 1980, Shahda has exhibited his work in several countries. The artist participated in the "Modern miniature" and "Women and war" exhibitions in Damas in 2000 and 2001. His work was presented during the Biennial of Alexdria in 2003 in Geneva in 2005 for the "Exhibition of the six artists" and the during the international Biennial of China in 2005 and 2008. Two of his paintings were selected for the International Biennial of Beijing.

In 2008, "Damas vu de Paris" was exhibited at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris.
