Born in Olomouc, Moravia, in 1944, Ivan Theimer completed his art studies at the Uherske Hradiste school, not far from his hometown.
In 1967, he presented his first solo exhibition in Coventry.
The following year he participated in the Bratislava International Biennale and in the same year decided to leave Czechoslovakia. He then went to France where he continued his studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
In 1969, he participated in the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture and the following year he won the IAT prize. From then on, personal and group exhibitions followed one another, in Paris as well as in Lyon, Bordeaux, Le Poët-Laval, Geneva, Basel. ; and in Italy, where he has twice participated in the Venice Biennale. He exhibits in Turin, Milan, Bologna, Rome, Parma, Bari and Brindisi. He also participates in International Fairs in the United States.
In 1975, he illustrated for Olivetti "Le passeggiate solitarie" by JJ Rousseau.
Theimer chose to live in Paris but frequently stays in Italy, in Pietrasanta, where the artisans he works with are located.
