Mensaje de estilo tipográfico
La invención en el siglo XV de la imprenta móvil por Johannes Gutenberg lo cambió todo. No sólo se podían publicar y distribuir palabras a gran escala, sino que la alfabetización mejoraría, se podrían crear y leer noticias y la tipografía pasaría de ser decorativa a funcional y a convertirse en una importante forma de arte. En la Alemania posterior a 1919 se creó la Bauhaus, que posteriormente vio cómo la famosa tipografía Sans-serif definía su estética. Artistas de la Bauhaus como Herbert Bayer influyeron en Jan Tschichold, el hombre que creó experiencias visuales a nivel subconsciente para todos los amantes de los libros, que ahora podían ver el arte en los libros, incluso cuando sólo observaban las letras. Su obra más importante fue Die Neue Typographie (La nueva tipografía), publicada en 1928, como obra maestra de la tipografía y el diseño gráfico modernos. Este libro estandarizó las prácticas tipográficas con un conjunto de reglas y reflejó un movimiento hacia un estilo de comunicación más universal. Aunque fue adoptado por artistas como Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein y Barbara Kruger, fue Mike Edwards el pionero del arte tipográfico contemporáneo, creando pinturas de palabras y retratos de texto.
