Retratos en blanco y negro
El atractivo del blanco y negro... El color puede articular la realidad y reflejar el realismo, pero al eliminarlo, se hace hincapié en el contraste y se utilizan tonos monocromáticos para crear una atmósfera que atrae instintivamente al espectador. Esta técnica para aumentar el impacto visual ha sido explotada por los fotógrafos desde que Joseph Nicéphore Niepce tomó las primeras imágenes en blanco y negro a principios del siglo XIX. Las fotografías de color natural no se desarrollaron hasta 1891, cuando Lipmann Gabriel aplicó el fenómeno de la interfase óptica de las ondas luminosas. Sin embargo, la fotografía en blanco y negro ha perdurado, especialmente en el campo del retrato. ¿Por qué ha ocurrido esto? Desde un punto de vista práctico, las fotografías en blanco y negro tienen una vida útil más larga... Pero incluso desde un punto de vista artístico, el hecho es que un artista puede captar la emoción, la profundidad, la expresión... la realidad, en definitiva, utilizando el tono y el contraste frente al objetivo. Basta con mirar la obra de Dorothea Lange, de gran difusión, Migrant Mother (1936) para comprender cómo un único retrato en blanco y negro puede convertirse en un símbolo de cosas como la maternidad, la angustia y la pobreza.
