Secesión Libre
Durante el periodo comprendido entre 1898 y 1919 se produjeron cambios rápidos y radicales en el panorama artístico alemán. Del impresionismo al expresionismo, del cubismo y el futurismo a la Nueva Objetividad y el constructivismo: Berlín fue testigo de muchos movimientos, desde la Secesión berlinesa hasta el Grupo de Noviembre. En 1898 se fundó la Secesión de Berlín en oposición a la política cultural establecida y anticuada del Imperio Alemán. Representaban los movimientos artísticos modernos, especialmente el impresionismo. Pero ya en 1910, otro grupo de jóvenes artistas desafió el arte del impresionismo. Se fundó la Nueva Secesión, un grupo de expresionistas. Cuatro años más tarde, las diferencias de opinión dentro de la Secesión de Berlín volvieron a enfrentarse: Se creó la Secesión Libre.
La Secesión Libre o en alemán "Freie Secession" fue una asociación de artistas modernos de Berlín que organizó exposiciones conjuntas entre 1914 y 1923. La Secesión Libre se formó después de que 42 miembros abandonaran a finales de 1913 la Secesión de Berlín, que perdió así a la mayoría de sus miembros y a casi todos sus artistas más destacados. El desastre de la Primera Guerra Mundial aceleró aún más el desarrollo del arte. En 1918 se fundó el Grupo de Noviembre, centrado en los aspectos políticos del arte. Max Liebermann, antiguo cofundador y líder de la Secesión de Berlín, fue nombrado presidente honorario de la Secesión Libre. Otros miembros destacados fueron Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Theo von Brockhusen y Charles Crodel.
