Illustrations plates et colorées
Au 21ème siècle, l'illustration plate et colorée est plus populaire que jamais. Cependant, ce style est loin d'être nouveau. Caractérisée par des formes bidimensionnelles et un manque d'effets visuels réalistes, l'illustration plate trouve ses racines dans divers styles et périodes de l'histoire de l'art, notamment l'art médiéval, l'art de la céramique de la Grèce antique ou encore le mouvement allemand Bauhaus. Ces mouvements artistiques ont tous privilégié les couleurs et les formes plates au détriment de l'illusion de profondeur. Le regain de popularité des illustrations plates et colorées dans le monde de l'art et du design peut en outre être considéré comme une réaction contre la tradition européenne de l'art académique, qui se caractérise par un style réaliste et des formes idéalisées.
Les illustrateurs qui travaillent avec des couleurs vives et non réalistes créent des mondes nouveaux et passionnants, mêlant souvent réalité et fantaisie dans des compositions surréalistes. Nombre de ces œuvres intègrent également une dimension narrative, la fonction typique de l'illustration étant de visualiser des aspects du monde réel.
