Photographie pop art
Dans les années 50, les artistes constatent l'évolution de la société américaine, marquée par le développement du capitalisme et de la consommation de masse. Au Royaume-Uni, ils expriment le ressenti d'une génération et appréhendent, grâce à l'art, les mutations sociales. Initiée par Richard Hamilton et Eduardo Paolozzi, la tendance va atteindre les États-Unis à la fin des années 50 et entraîner l'émergence d'une nouvelle génération d'artistes : Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg ou encore Jasper Johns immortalisent les symboles de cette consommation de masse.
On donne à cette mouvance le nom « pop art » pour art populaire. En effet, le pop art utilise les images des icônes de la pop culture, les célébrités, les acteurs, les mannequins ou encore les musiciens. Les matériaux utilisés ne sont pas forcément prestigieux car les artistes se détachent peu à peu des matériaux nobles pour créer plus facilement et pour produire une plus grande quantité d'œuvres, qu'il s'agisse de peinture pop art, de dessin ou de sérigraphie. C'est d'ailleurs pour cela que la sérigraphie est privilégiée, elle permet d'éditer les œuvres en plusieurs exemplaires. Les artistes du pop art font perdre aux œuvres leur unicité, l'art devient plus accessible.
Le pop art va ensuite atteindre le Japon dans les années 80 et se manifester à travers les œuvres du groupe d'artistes Kakai Kiki, dont le chef de file est Takashi Murakami, qui critique la société de manière provocante en y fondant les éléments de la culture japonaise.
Auparavant considérée comme support de recherche, c'est avec le surréalisme et le pop art que la photographie s'élève au rang de pratique artistique. Les artistes l'utilisent pour s'approprier les images d'icônes et pour relater les faits sociaux.
Toutes ces photographies nous parviennent comme gage d'un mouvement artistique mais elles montrent aussi l'attitude des artistes de l'époque : un mouvement de pensée où l'art utilise et détourne les contenus publicitaires, télévisuels et médiatiques.
