Childhood memories
Paris From May 2, 2019 to June 2, 2019
Presentation
Life means nothing without time. We are planted in its flow, and ageing allows us to grow. Part of that growth is reflection, which is the theme of these images. Each depicts an adult tormented by memories from childhood, witnessing a moment which helped them – for better or worse – become the person they are now.
Iconic objects are significant to these tableaus, and provide hints about the dance between past and present in ways that imply potential paradises forgotten or to come. There’s an inevitable melancholy to some of the scenarios, which are constructed to provide exquisite fractalised feelings that will linger long after you’ve spent your own time with these monochrome time machines.
Nuance and complexity go together, but so too does the possibility of escaping the web that the past casts over the present, suggesting the scarier still thought that the future could be different. Such concerns are familiar to us all, and these haunting and potent pictures offer viewers a lot to consider – not just about their subjects but concerning themselves, their place in society, and what the years ahead could look like.
