Biography

Born in 1932, Norval Morrisseau was a Canadian Indigenous artist. Also known as Copper Thunderbird and nicknamed the "Picasso of the North", Morrisseau used prints, acrylic paintings and drawings to explore traditional Indigenous themes.

A self-taught artist, Morrisseau created his own artistic techniques based on ancient myths and imagery that came to him in dreams. As his practice developed, Morriseau's art became more personal, depicting his own narratives.

In 1978, Morrisseau was made a Member of the Order of Canada - a high ranking civilian honor. He died in 2007.
