Biography
Born in 1975 in Ploemeur. Lives and works in Bordeaux.
"Sébastien Vonier provokes shifts in techniques and materials often borrowed from industrial construction, references and territories resulting from a strange alliance of imagination and extreme reality. He thus continues to broaden his thinking on sculpture and refers as much to landscape, architecture and urban planning as to a floating, indecisive approach to decoration and design. He summons, brings together and articulates, in surprising propositions, the private and public spheres, the ground and the wall, the functional and the indeterminate, the conceptual demands of art and the design of the manufactured object. The challenge is the inscription in space through an experience of its energy, its presence and its fictional implications by maintaining a close relationship to the body and the human scale." Text by Didier Arnaudet, for the Forêt d'art contemporain
"Among Sébastien Vonier's works, many are undeniably sculptures, but they can also be viewed from a utilitarian perspective. They are based on the tension between two seemingly antithetical regimes: they point toward art and, simultaneously, recycle a functional rhetoric. [...]
Shifting is frequent in Sébastien Vonier's work: spatial reversal, shifting from architectural fragment to painting, from plan to volume, from sculpture to object or landscape. [...]"
