Gopal Dagnogo

Gopal Dagnogo was born in 1973 in Abidjan in Ivory Coast to an Ivorian father and a French mother. Made aware of art by his family, his desire to create was affirmed from childhood. As a high school student, he left for France and settled in Bordeaux where he continued his studies. After this first period in France, Gopal Dagnogo returned to Africa in 1997, first to Ivory Coast then to Burkina Faso. He settled in Ouagadougou where he learned traditional bronze techniques for three years.

Each painting by Gopal Dagnogo is the result of an intuition, a creation of the hands that the artist lets freely express itself. Both playful and refined, the artist reappropriates the classic genre of still life to bring out a vital energy. Through his precise line and the use of a palette of vibrant colors, his paintings constitute the story in images of a Barthesian mythology of everyday life enriched by the dual culture of its creator.

Gallinaceous bestiary lost among heterogeneous objects belonging as much to the Ivorian daily life recognizable by these bottles of beer, Maggi cubes, pairs of slouched sneakers, as to the European bourgeois interiors symbolized by the silhouettes of Louis XV armchairs: these are the signs of language that the artist uses to tell the story of our time.
