Biography

Mario Sorrenti is an Italian-American photographer and director born on October 24, 1971, in Naples. He moved to New York at the age of ten and comes from an artistic family: his mother, Francesca Sorrenti, is an art director and photographer, and his younger brother, Davide Sorrenti, was also a photographer before his death in 1997.

Sorrenti began his career in the 1990s, gaining recognition through an intimate series of photographs of Kate Moss, his partner at the time, shot for the Obsession fragrance campaign by Calvin Klein. This iconic collaboration marked a turning point in fashion photography, introducing a rawer and more emotional aesthetic.

His style is characterized by bold compositions, sophisticated use of light, and an experimental approach to color. He has worked for prestigious publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W Magazine, The New York Times, and Self Service. His advertising campaigns include collaborations with renowned brands like Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, Lancôme, and Paco Rabanne.

In 2012, he was selected to shoot the famous Pirelli Calendar, featuring models like Kate Moss, Milla Jovovich, and Joan Smalls in a series of sensual black-and-white portraits.

Beyond photography, Sorrenti has directed music videos, including "Daughters" by John Mayer in 2004, and has published several books, such as The Machine (2004), a tribute to his brother Davide, Draw Blood for Proof (2011), and Kate (2018), a compilation of previously unseen photos of Kate Moss.

His works are part of the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Mario Sorrenti continues to live and work in New York, exploring the boundaries between fashion, art, and intimacy through his lens.
