Biography

Jordan Casteel is an American painter. Born in 1989, she obtained her MFA in painting and printmaking in 2014 from Yale University.

Known for her figurative portraits, Casteel's subjects range from her family and friends to strangers she encounters in New York. Her large-scale oil paintings are celebrated for the way in which she captures the essence and humanity of her subjects. 


Casteel's works can be found in the public collections of several established institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Pérez Art Museum, Miami and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her portrait of fashion designer Aurora James was the September 2020 cover of Vogue magazine. In 2021, Casteel was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship.
