First invented in a circus during the 16th century, the clown is a character with a humorous disposition. His purpose is to entertain and make the audience laugh during shows. Clowns, usually represented with their red noses and huge shoes, have evolved over time. Nowadays, there are all kinds of clowns: red clowns, white clowns... but especially these characters have left their comical role to become terrorizing. Their appearances in horror films have changed the public's view of them. Many artists such as Toni Chartier and Guillaume Sea or Jean Lurçat were inspired by these characters, who are portrayed as happy on the surface, but inwardly sad.
