La noche, un tema misterioso e infinito que ha fascinado a los artistas a lo largo de los tiempos. En primer lugar la luna, encantadora, vinculada al arquetipo femenino, a menudo personificación de la feminidad. Luego las estrellas fugaces o inmóviles, innumerables en el cielo, pequeños toques de luz, testigos de un eterno resplandor del más allá. Por último, la oscuridad, el oscurecimiento opaco cuando el sol se pone. El cielo nocturno y la noche estrellada no son universos reservados a los noctámbulos. Este fenómeno que da ritmo a nuestra vida, banal y literalmente cotidiana, sigue siendo una fuente inagotable de inspiración para los artistas que no dejan de observarlo para transmitirlo mejor. Entre ellos, el fotógrafo Roger Schall que aprovechó la aparición de la Leica y la Rolleiflex a finales de los años 20 para interesarse por las fotografías tomadas in situ. Contemporáneo de Doisneau, Brassaï o Cartier-Bresson, se hizo notar rápidamente por los grandes jefes de la prensa y su pequeño estudio fotográfico se convirtió rápidamente en una verdadera agencia fotográfica que distribuía en revistas de todo el mundo. Trabaja de noche y la nuit, se convierte en su tema favorito de exploración. Al adoptar un punto de vista neutral, deja que su cámara se centre en la propia ciudad.
