Presentation
Born in 1965, Silvia Calmejane studied live model, watercolor and oil painting in Paris.
Silvia Calmejane decided to devote herself to painting after working in advertising, an experience that still has echoes in her work.
She frees herself very quickly from theacademic drawing and starts to experiment with automatic drawing, a technique similar to automatic writing. A spontaneous and instinctive painting...
Left-handed and confused, her left hand is freer, its strokes are stronger and more faithful to what she wishes to express. She quickly abandons the canvas and uses wood as a support that fits her and her collages, acrylic paintings, and plexi, which plays an important role in her work, as it finally gives a voice her mirror writing.
Today, she invests her own space with her own marks, leaving quietly behind her a few traces of her history.
Silvia Calmejane?s work is inspired by the art brut of Jean Dubuffet but also by his artistic vision, the art of non-reproduction: " ... I would say that art begins only when we draw badly, because the more poorly we draw, the more we make a creative contribution.?
This vision does not mean she can?t admire Klimt and Egon Schiele, Matisse and Picasso but it is in the work of Combas, Basquiat, Villeglé, Rauschenberg ... that she finds herself.
