My artistic quest is a return to the shadow (an ba fey) a pause on accredited knowledge and the reappropriation of a way of being. A struggle to reinvest obliterated inner territories

Biography

Born in 1978, Sylvia Eustache Rools is from Martinique, she spent her first three years in Martinique, then grew up in the Parisian suburbs. She obtained a diploma in Textile Arts and Printing from the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré in 2003.

For several years, her artistic work matured in the shadows with complete freedom. A practice emerges whose guiding thread is a sensitive approach to intimate and terrestrial memories. This quest for depths is illustrated by work combining textile geology, writing, and artifacts.

Sylvia Eustache Rools approaches textile in a pictorial way by proceeding through back-and-forth between oxidation, dye fermentations, vegetable dyes, and inked interventions. Earths and pigments are also deposited on her supports. Painting is freely invited there.

Fascinated by rock, minerals, and oxidation phenomena, she thus explores the possibilities of textile geology, employing herself to transform silks and satins until reaching a geological work, around time and memory. A practice that does not prioritize a technique but rather a journey, a point of balance between the Known and the Unknown, the Doing and the Non-Doing.
