Description
SERB 1186
The oil painting on Canvas titled "Near the Fortress" captures a moment of movement, warmth, and light near a historic stronghold bathed in the colors of a setting or rising sun. At the heart of the composition, two chestnut horses walk purposefully across a narrow bridge, their bodies glowing with deep reds and oranges as if absorbing the golden light of the sky. Their presence is both grounded and poetic, a reminder of strength and nobility in a world that feels at once ancient and timeless. Behind them rises a powerful structure—an old stone fortress gate, weathered by time but still proud and majestic. The texture of the fortress is rich and layered, with brushstrokes of purples, blues, and warm ochres interweaving to create a structure that seems to hold memories within its walls. The arched entrance invites the viewer's gaze into the distance, revealing a bright patch of sky and an open path beyond. This small architectural detail hints at transition—a movement from shadow to light, from past to future. A figure stands just inside the archway, partially hidden in shadow, further enhancing the mysterious narrative of the scene. It is unclear whether this person is a guard, a caretaker, or a traveler, but their subtle presence adds a human dimension to the composition, drawing attention to the scale of the architecture and the passage of time. Surrounding the horses are doves in flight, their wings captured in expressive, energetic brushstrokes. Some rise into the golden sky, while others flutter near the ground, reflecting subtle purples, whites, and blues. These birds bring dynamism and symbolism to the painting—doves are often associated with peace, freedom, and spiritual transcendence, and their placement here suggests harmony amidst stone and history. They soften the heavy presence of the fortress, offering balance and grace. The sky is a spectacle in itself—an explosion of warm yellows, soft pinks, and diffused oranges, mingling into cooler purples and blues as it moves across the canvas. This gradation of color not only sets the emotional tone of the work but also contrasts beautifully with the dark silhouettes of the gate and the vibrant bodies of the horses. The painter's technique here is both bold and sensitive, using thick, textured strokes to suggest both the fleetingness of light and the enduring presence of stone and animal.

Works by Boris Serdyuk are held in museums in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, as well as in private collections in Ukraine, European countries, the USA, Israel, and other countries.
In 2018, the artist entered the global art space of the creative platform in New York, where seven of his works were included in the catalog "Painting & Graphics."
Currently lives and works in Kremenchuk, Poltava Region.
Took his first steps in the world of visual arts within the walls of his local school, then studied at Yuriev-Polsky Pedagogical School. After graduation, he returned to his homeland and started working as a drawing and painting teacher.
Later, he realized that for an artist, creative freedom is essential. Thus, after seventeen years of teaching, he left the profession to focus on his creative work. The artist is content to have the opportunity to engage in his beloved craft, which he considers the meaning of his life.
His journey had its ups and downs, victories in competitions, and recognition from admirers, yet he never ceased his determined quest for his artistic path. In ancient times, "serdyuk" referred to professional infantrymen in the Cossack ranks. This heritage likely passed down not only the surname but also many Cossack traits to the artist, including hard work, modesty, and human dignity.
Boris Serdyuk creates in genres such as portrait, landscape, and thematic composition. His works are varied, reflecting the artist's impressions of the places he visited. Among them are picturesque corners of Kremenchuk and Dnipro views, urban and maritime landscapes, the grandeur of the Carpathian Mountains, and cozy Ukrainian villages. His canvases are intriguing in terms of color and relatively compositionally perfect, revealing the life of nature at the time of their execution.
There are also commissioned portraits and paintings, such as "Shevchenko in Baturyn." He spent over a year working on it, studying the architecture of the former hetman capital. However, the artist prefers to work swiftly, capturing the vision of a painting before it fades from his mind and before the sun changes its angle and shadows. On average, according to the artist, he spends about 40 minutes on a single landscape.
Boris successfully combines a poetic perception of the world and a deep understanding of nature with brilliant artistic execution. His paintings exude a special light and a delicate sense of nature – vivid colors on the canvas resonate with intermediate tones. The artist has abandoned contours, replacing them with separate and contrasting brushstrokes; his paintings amaze with colors, not only their diversity but also the amount of substance applied to the canvas – vibrant, vivid, voluminous.
Describing the master's works is a challenging task. Boris Serdyuk's works are special – they are painted with soul. One must see and feel the wonderful harmony of nature on the artist's canvases firsthand and touch the great mystery of Art.
