Description

In this ochre painting on eucalyptus bark, Muluymuluy Wirrpanda depicted a traditional woven collection bag (dillybag) called Bol'pu.
She explains: “Two ancestral women named Ganapa and Banyili were crossing the plain called Garaŋardi or Bukulili. As they walked, they carried their fish on their backs, with the rope across their foreheads. They were fetching (fish) from a (waterhole). There are a few at this place. The (fish) are called (black and white striped fish), and or (catfish). This is a sacred land for my Dhudi-Djapu clan.
After an osprey took flight, the two women crossed this country on foot to reach their homeland of Dhuruputjpi. The bird, a brolga, flew above while the women fished.
They left their two digging sticks beside the (banyan tree).
They hung their collection bags there.

Presentation

Muluymuluy Wirrpanda is an Australian Aboriginal artist of the Dhudi-Djapu people, born in 1959 in Ngukurr, Arnhem Land. She is part of the Buku-Larrnggay Aboriginal Artists Cooperative, in Yirrkala, northeast Arnhem Land. Her father is Molulmi. She was the young wife of Wakuthi Marawili, one of the oldest men in Arnhem Land. Known as Banbay, "the blind man," due to his poor eyesight, he died in 2005. Her sons, Djambawa and Nuwandjali, play an important role in the day-to-day management of the Madarrpa clan's vast territory, Yilpara. Muluymuluy works with them to produce important Madarrpa clan works. Her sister, Mulkun Wirrpanda, is also a prominent artist.
