Hold On | Cat on the American Flag

A small black cat clings to the surface beneath it, paws stretched forward, body suspended mid-slip — caught in that fragile moment between holding on and letting go. At first, the image reads as playful and absurd, but quickly shifts into something deeply familiar: the quiet, stubborn effort to stay in control when everything feels slightly unstable.

Set against the bold geometry of the American flag, the composition creates a striking contrast between structure and vulnerability. The rigid stripes and iconic pattern suggest stability, order, even identity — while the cat introduces something softer, more human: hesitation, tension, and the instinct to hold on just a little longer.

The expression is subtle but telling — not panic, not confidence, but something in between. That suspended emotional state where we are neither falling nor safe, just… existing in the effort.

Hand-painted in oil on canvas, this 30 × 30 cm (12 × 12 in) original blends soft, expressive brushwork with clean, graphic composition. Deep blues, bold reds, crisp whites, and dark fur tones create a visually direct yet emotionally layered image.

Balancing irony with tenderness, the work reflects a universal feeling — the quiet resilience of holding on, even when you're not sure how long you can.
