The Scale of Significance, 2026

Natalia Yangalycheva

This work explores the idea of significance and the way we often measure it through size, influence, or visible status. The artist challenges this perception and invites the viewer to consider a different perspective — one in which value is not determined by scale, but by connection.

There is no single center here, no figure that holds unquestionable dominance. Each element exists within its own role while simultaneously contributing to the integrity of the whole. The artist reflects on the idea that importance does not arise from power or control, but from the ability to belong to something larger than oneself.

The painting speaks about hidden forms of influence — those that rarely attract attention yet often become the foundation of stability and meaning. It reminds us that within any system, what appears secondary may in fact sustain the balance, while the seemingly insignificant can shape the character of the whole.

As part of the “Hierarchy" series, this work reconsiders conventional notions of importance and status. It suggests that significance does not require superiority. To matter, one does not need to be the largest, the strongest, or the most visible. Sometimes true value lies simply in occupying one's place and creating connections that hold everything else together.
