Description
This figurative portrait captures a moment of serenity. The gaze falls on a man wearing a golden straw hat. The face fragments into shades of red and gray. The line is free. It gives way to a raw expression.
The mixed technique brings a tactile richness to the composition. Touches of paint mingle with nervous sketches. The bright white of the shirt contrasts with a fragmented background. Splashes of blue and purple structure the space.
The whole exudes a calm presence. The work on light emphasizes the texture of the beard and the folds of the fabric. The composition plays on the balance between precision and abstraction. The final rendering favors the authenticity of the subject. This painting made in 2025 relies on a play of superimposed materials.
Presentation
Sitelle's self-taught pictorial practice flourishes through a rich and fertile artistic approach. It combines visual sensitivity – via photographic practice, in particular – and the knowledge and fluidity of the performed body through theatre, dance theatre, stage direction, and reading aloud. Haunted by words, stories, and their staging, the artist's pictorial works emerge as wonderful cinematographic shots – close-ups, from which a suggested and enigmatic off-screen space emanates. The narration that colours all of Sitelle's work might also be that which we internalise, that which we tell ourselves. This internalising of story, the thrall of words, and the exploration they lead to, have long taken symbolically and emotionally charged abstract forms in the artist's paintings. Gradually, with incontestable maturity, they crystallise into human figures rooted within increasingly familiar landscapes.
