When the fisherman comes home, 2026

Larissa Eremeeva

“When the fisherman comes home" is a large evocative abstract painting from the collection “Driftwood". This collection is triggered by the artist's experience of living in Friesland with its dykes, seascapes, harbours and wide pastures. It reflects things carried by water, weathered but not destroyed, displaced yet finding a place, remnants that become beautiful, movement and stillness, land and sea, fragility and endurance. Many of these aspects suface in this artwork.

Earthy ochre and muted olive tones dominate the canvas. Broad, sweeping brushstrokes create a sense of depth and movement. The composition balances heavy gestural masses with delicate, spindly lines. These thin markings suggest organic forms or distant horizons.

There is a tension between the solid blocks of color and the airy, void-like spaces. This contrast evokes a feeling of silence and reflection. The application of paint varies from opaque washes to translucent glazes. Light filters through the composition, adding a luminous quality to the muted palette. Tiny white geometric accents puncture the central area, offering a sharp visual contrast. These fragmented shapes suggest scattered remnants or distant lights. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation and spatial ambiguity.
